A Hermes handbag , a pair of Christian Louboutin high heels, a set of Chanel jewelry and a beautiful dress from Dior are all what girls all around the world want to wear. And now, they wears these high branded clothes, bag and heels in college with heavy makeup and gorgeous hair. It seems like the college has turned into a fashion runway…
Not only girls who pay so much attention to their appearance, but boys too. They wear fancy outfits in college like a pair of ripped jeans or colorful tight pants, that distinguish themselves from the hoi polloi. Many boys have also ‘beautified’ themselves with permed or straightened and highlighted hair.
“Fashion is the way I express the artistic side of me,” said Business Major student, Hermawan Setyo, or affectionately called TYO. “I always love being outstanding and unique.” TYO loves wearing eye-catching, colorful shirts and pants, and also extremely huge sunglasses.
Taïs Bohigas also gives her comments on those students wearing fancy outfits. She says, “I really like to see people’s personality through their outfits. Clothing is a way to express yourself, thus I like people expressing themselves singularly and not wearing all the same trendy clothes.”
Marrisa Tjokro, a Science major student from Indonesia agrees, “My look defines who I really am.”
Some students wear artistic dresses to college. These dresses come with complex design and extraordinarily details. But these dresses don’t really look comfortable and don’t allow them to move or sit easily.
A student from communication class, Bianca Chanhoika, commented on this , “I’m totally fine with people who wear fancy outfits because I think it’s a kind of hobby and I like to appreciate beautiful things. But I would rather choose to be outstandingly fashionable during weekends and comfortable for school.”
“When I go to class in college, I won’t dress up like I’m hanging out. I want to be comfortable. I’ll spend most of the time in class or library to study, so comfortable is key,” Marrisa Tjokro said, “Those girls looks painfully fashionable.”
Being too preoccupied with their appearance, these students often neglect their main purpose of going to school ,which is to study. They may spend hours just to prepare themselves before going to college. They could spend so much time finding the perfect pair of shoes to match the clothes or painting their nails and doing their hairs. However, they might probably spend less than an hour to do their homework or to study for the tests. This obviously will result in poor academic performances of these students.
Taïs said, “My academic goals are much more important than what I wear. I like to wear clothes what I feel comfortable with and what I think are appropriate for the school. It definitely take some times to think what to wear, but I don’t spend too much time on it.”
Likewise, Chanhoika thinks that both her appearance and academic result are equally important. It’s impossible not to concentrate on her look but her good academic achievement is the key for her future.
There is no doubt that there is self-gratification in fashion for some students, especially for female students. To wear outstanding clothes and make-up boosts their confidence and creates extra enthusiasm in their daily life. However, TYO thinks , “These students should not have tried ‘too hard’. They could wear something comfortable and look effortlessly fashionable at the same time. Students go to college to study thus they should not be pre-occupied with their look to focus on their academic achievement.”
